Why the Horse Year Matters

Four religions. One sacred mountain. One extraordinary year.

📿

Tibetan Buddhism

Shakyamuni Buddha was born in a Horse Year. According to the Kalachakra Tantra, one circumambulation of Kailash in a Horse Year equals thirteen in ordinary years. Chakrasamvara's presence amplifies the merit.

🕉️

Hinduism

Kailasa is the abode of Lord Shiva. In the Horse Year, Shiva and his consort are believed to dance atop the mountain, blessing all pilgrims who make the journey.

☸️

Bön

Bön founder Tonpa Shenrab descended from heaven in a Horse Year. As the cosmic axis (Yungdrung Gutseg), Kailash's power peaks during the Horse Year, making counter-clockwise circumambulation especially powerful.

🪷

Jainism

Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara, attained nirvana here. Circumambulating Kailash in the Horse Year honors all twenty-three Tirthankaras and purifies accumulated karma.

One circumambulation of Mount Kailash in a Horse Year equals thirteen in ordinary years. This is not hyperbole — it is a thousand-year tradition born from the convergence of time, faith, and blessing.
— Tibetan Buddhist tradition, rooted in the Kalachakra Tantra

Book Accommodation Early

Darchen's normal capacity is ~2000 people. Horse Year peak can reach 5000-8000. Guesthouses at Drirapuk fill by mid-morning. Bring a tent and sleeping bag as backup.

📝

Apply for Permits ASAP

Tibet Travel Permit + Alien's Travel Permit for Ngari. Horse Year surges mean processing delays. Start 2-4 months ahead. You must join a licensed tour group.

🚗

Transport Prices Double

The 1200km drive from Lhasa to Darchen can cost double during Horse Year. Book your vehicle 2-3 months in advance. Last-minute booking is nearly impossible.

🎒

Bring Your Own Supplies

Teahouses along the 52km trail stock instant noodles and water, but supplies run out fast in a Horse Year. Stock up on 2-3 days of dry food in Lhasa or Shigatse before heading to Darchen.
